How would you improve your community?
I may be a bit biased as I have only slightly less degrees than a thermometer, but I would (and strive to) repair and rebuild the educational system. Not just in my community but in my entire country.
The existing educational system in the US was designed after the civil war ended to produce good factory workers. We had enough encouragement over the years to push those with the aptitude and interest to go beyond that mandated system but we also had trade schools which produced the people who literally built and maintained the country. Both were and still are very important but our methodology is sadly underfunded and horribly outdated.
We need people who are taught how to think, not what to think and with more and more of our young people being “taught” at home they are not given the opportunities to learn how but given plenty of the what.
We need to rebuild the two tract educational system, one for those who want to progress through advanced degrees in science and medicine and the like, and one for those who want to build and maintain our civil and electrical and construction (to name a few) systems.
And we need to eliminate the stigmas present with either tract of learning. We need to support and encourage all forms of learning, especially of diverse topics and painful historical facts so we can stop trying to hide our past and actually start learning from it.

I am a college professor. I couldn’t agree more on the topic. The educational system in North America (I am Canadian) is falling apart.
Absolutely is falling apart and getting worse all the time. I often wonder what the ultimate goal the people who continually cut education funding could be……
